‘Why do you want to cut your hair short(er)?’
I initially thought that was an interesting ice-breaking question. I mean, most hair dressers start with ‘ What do you work as?’ or ‘ Today on leave ar? ‘
Well you see, going to the hair dresser can sometimes be a ultra pleasant or epic horrifying experience, both lingering on either sides of a thin line which can be determined by just an extra SNIP of the scissors. As your eyes witness the fall of those could-be-perfect strands of precious hair, a earth shattering life changing ( at least for 2 weeks or so) reveals – it’s a hair salon trip gone wrong.
So, moral of the story, it is important to go to the right salon with the right hair snipping values and cultures. I initially thought little of the question and went on to reply: ‘ The ends of my hair looks dry and unhealthy. My hair is also getting too heavy and wanna reduce the stress on my hair roots.’
He went on to ask: ‘ So what kind of hair style are you looking at?’
‘ I would like to listen to your recommendation. My only need is to be able to still tie my hair up for sports.’ I replied
‘ I will cut away your dry ends but not too short, it will be below the shoulders, about 3 inches away, till the length I want, and then we’ll do a ombre dye with brown and gold hues, similar to what you already did on your last dye. The ombre will be darker on the top and lighter at the bottom, as well as lighter from the front and to the back.’
Tip 1. Make sure you know what the hairdresser is going to do and you are ok with it.
Such assuring description! Honestly, since it was a sponsored cut, I was prepared to let them do what they needed to my hair, as long as I can still tie it up for sports. I was also in the mood for something new and refreshing (read the in trend purple/red/green ombre highlights), which, looking back, it was just a spur of moment and I’m probably not ready for it yet. I mean, I’m in the safe hands of someone with more than 10 years of hairdressing experience!
Tip 2. Trust your hairdresser and give him a chance.
My hairdresser then continued: ‘So we are going to see each other for about 3 hours today.’
Tip 3: Know how long the session is going to take so that you may plan your schedule for the rest of the day.
All thanks to the very personable Zhi Jun who came in for her hair do and warmed up the whole atmosphere, we started to chat more. At some point in time, a few kids went past and they started to rub their dirty hands (to me, all kids have dirty hands ) across the full glass and glass door frontage of the salon and dirtied the glass with their dirty and oily handiwork. No pun intended. It was this moment when I came to understood the meaning of the very first question:
There are 2 hairdressing partners at Vast Salon and the other hairdresser exclaimed (translated to english): ‘Just cleaned the glass and now we have to clean it again!’
‘Why did you guys used a glass frontage? You can paste large posters or large scale black stickers then the dirt won’t be that obvious anymore.’
‘The clarity of the glass frontage is very important to us. We need the glass frontage as we observe you from the time you walk towards the door, to the way you open the door, talk to us and settle down. From the way you walk and carry yourself, that’s how we recommend hair styles that is better suited for your physical appearance and character demeanour. When you (ZH) came in, I knew at once that your straight hair style didn’t suit you. You are a sassy person and curls are more suitable. ‘
Tip 4: Your hairstyle is also you personality. It should suit your physical appearance and your character demeanour. A professional hairstylist must be able to spot and recommend accordingly.
Though I came in with only 1 expectation, to retain a long enough hair for tying, I had previously given them my IG account user as well as pictures of myself. My hairdresser had previously went through my IG account and used it to better understand me and my likings – I really really really appreciate the effort!
With his understanding (of me being a business person with preference for classic/ classy choices 😛 ), he thus decided on no bold colours with straight hair and trendy yet classy colours.
Tip 5: Help your hairdresser. Show him who you are and what you want.
