[Sponsored Review – but you can still trust my words la!]
I have heard so much about the effectiveness of Clinique’s products many years back (my very first eyeshadow quad was a birthday gift from Clinique! ) and dropped by the counters on several occasions. However, I never got down to make the purchase myself. Maybe I was distracted by the other more fanciful brands with pretty packaging – Clinique looked too plain for me. So when I was sent Clinique’s 3-Step Skin Care System, the idiom that goes ‘never judge a book by it’s cover’ worked it’s truth.
It’s really REALLY Simple.
To start off, Clinique made the steps to great skin really simple. We all know that once puberty hits, our hormones and skin goes haywire. Our facial skin will start to have a mind of it’s own and choose one of the following four skin types.
Skin Type 1: Very dry to dry
Skin Type 2: Dry combination – Skin is normal in the T-zone but tight and flaky in the cheeks and elsewhere
Skin Type 3: Combination oily – Skin is normal in the cheeks but oily in the T-zone
Skin Type 4: Oily
( Of course, there are the lucky ones who retain their baby smooth skin but even for people without obviously problematic skin, your skin can get even better with the right type of skin care products! )
Identify your skin type and Clinique has a effective and proven-to-work 3-Step Skin Care System for you. If you have difficulties identifying your skin type, just head to any Clinique counters across the island and their professionally trained staff will assist you in finding out what skin type you have. (After that, buy your products from Luxola using my 15% discount code below! heh heh! Sorry staff at the counters >.<) Don’t forget that our skin type DO change according to age, stress and our environment thus it is also recommend to visit the counters regularly for a follow-up skin checkups.
I have Dry combination skin and am thus given Skin Type 2 3-Step Skin Care Kit with the Liquid Facial Soap (IT’S SOOoooo GOOD) to put to the test.
3 basic steps, twice a day
For any skin type, here’s the most basic and effective way to maintain great healthy skin.
*Step 1: Cleanse
**Step 2: Exfoliate
***Step 3: Moisturise
2 times a day, everyday.
Step 1: Cleanse – Liquid Facial Soap (Mild)
Clinique Liquid Facial Soap is a simple and mild cleanser that is formulated to never dry your skin out and maintain and repair your skin’s protective lipids. While the product thoroughly cleanse and dissolve dirt and impurities on the skin’s surface, I still find it essential to use a make-up remover to remove any traces of makeup first, especially if you are someone who wear heavy makeup on a daily basis. Don’t leave any chances!
The cleanser comes in a convenient pump packaging and the thick gel-like texture quickly lathers into soft and non-drying foam. I love foam. While I use my fingers to message the product on my skin surface, you can also choose to use it with a sponge or brush for deeper cleansing. When done, simply wash off with lukewarm water.
On a closer look at the ingredient list, this product contains yummy Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice that has a soothing effect on the skin. It’s no wonder that my skin feels relaxed and refreshed with no tight feeling that I sometimes get from other cleaners! Nothing to complain about this product – I’ll probably be using it till the last drop!
There are also different cleansers from Clinique to suit your skin – Extra-mild, Mild, and Extra-Strength – explore them on Luxola.
Step 2: Exfoliate – Clarifying Lotion 2 for dry combination skin
The next step is to tone and exfoliate. Clinique’s clarifying lotion is a toner that exfoliates gently and gets rid of blemishes. To use: Use with a cotton ball, and sweep over face and neck after cleansing. Also known as the “difference maker”, the clarifying lotion draws impurities out of the pores, sweep away dulling flakes and excess oil to reveal clearer skin. Made for Asian skin, it also makes pore look smaller and less visible.
While I have not experienced the reduced size effect on my huge stubborn pores, I do find my skin cleaner and rejuvenated after each use. The exfoliating effect also sets our skin up for the next step – to replenish moisture. With all the gunk out of those pores, the skin care benefits of other products will be able to penetrate our skin better and work more effectively.
Note that my Clarifying Lotion 2 is likely to be a alcohol based toner. I never had any irritation issues with alcohol before so it worked great for me. Moreover, it is surprisingly non-dying and I love the refreshing cooling sensation after application. Alcohol also helps kill bacteria that causes pimples and acne on the face. However, if you have past alcohol issues with your products, I would suggest that you visit the Clinique counters for a test swipe or consult the staff for alternatives.
Also, there’s no safety cap feature so don’t spill it.
Step 3: Replenish – Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion for Very Dry to Dry Combination Skin.
Have you read how moisturizers changed my life? The moisturizer is the best part of all – it makes your skin supple, soft to the touch, and looking really fresh! Even for ladies with oily skin, it is even more crucial that you do not skip the moisturizer as most often than not, the reason for oily skin is lack of moisture and dryness, thus your skin produces more oil thinking it’s helping to protect itself. Yea, the skin’s mind is pretty warped but we got to deal with it – with moisturizer.
This is the products that gets frequent rave reviews for people with oilier skin – it got my rave too! This dermatologist-developed formula combines all-day hydration with skin-strengthening ingredients to help skin look younger, longer. It also helps strengthen skin’s own moisture barrier by 54%, so more moisture stays in. Despite it’s cream texture, the product also absorbs really fast into your skin, so no excuses to skip this step!
The only reason to pout for this product – there’s no fragrance. Absolutely nothing. Being used to products with fragrances (sometimes I buy coz it smells so good!), I was taken aback at how ‘doctor’ it smelt. However as we all know, fragrances is another common skin irritant/ allergen and long term use of products with fragrances (read chemicals) can make the skin more sensitive. At Clinique, a product is allergy tested 12 times on 600 people; if even one of those 7,200 applications incites an allergic reaction, Clinique will reformulate. Clinique definitely stood by it’s anthem to produce allergy-free products!
Every skin type requires different levels of moisture, and Clinique products are made for that in mind. The Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion or Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel will balance out and hydrate your skin where it is most needed.

Now that I am brought over by the awesome experience, I’ve also became mesmerised by the beauty and simplicity of the green, purple and yellow bottles of goodness. Love how they glow gently under my dressing area lights!
Well, my greatest weakness is still packaging after all!
