ION INSIDER: GOOD HAIR DAYS MAKE ME FEEL LIKE I CAN TAKE OVER THE WORLD

[ This article was previously published in ION Insider Blog. Read it here. ]

When Victoria Beckham was here for a fashion tour, she famously created a hashtag dedicated to Singapore’s heat – #FightTheFizz. Indeed, thanks to the exceptionally humid climate of Singapore and the high stress levels of living in a fast-paced city, many of us face frizzy hair and multiple scalp issues. Here are some hair care strategies and products to fight the frizz.

Good Hair Days make me feel like I can take over the world

First up, we need to understand how frizz occurs. The cross-section of our hair is made up of 3 layers and frizzes occur at the outermost layer of the hair shaft – the cuticle. The cuticle works as a protective scale and determines how your hair looks, despite its transparent nature.  When exposed to the sun or other forms of heat damage, the cuticle layer is raised, allowing moisture from the air to pass through and cause the layer to swell. This makes your hair appear dry and frizzy. Using the right products can help ensure balance and promote healthy hair. (Fun fact: the cuticle is transparent)

When talking about hair oils, a common concern is that the product might weigh the hair down, making it look flat and lifeless. Some hair products also contain silicone that clogs up hair follicles, leading to hair loss. This is not the case for Dr. Hauschka Hair Oil, which is packed with a whole lot of goodness and does not contain silicone. The instructions even advise you to massage the oil into your scalp.

Dr.Hauschka Neem Hair Oil contains 3 main awesome oil extracts:

1)    Neem oil, an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory ingredient with healing properties. It strengthens hair keratin (found in the middle cortex layer of our hair), fortifying, softening and renewing damaged, brittle hair.
2)    Chamomile extract that helps to soothe and balance, battling common issues such as oily and dry scalps by re-balancing the scalp PH levels.
3)    Rosemary essential oil that enlivens and support healthy hair follicles.

On the first try, I really enjoyed how cooling the product feels on my scalp! I remembered having a headache caused by flu fever and the minty sensation helped to relax my mind and lift the pain. The oil also has a refreshing mint scent that helped clear my stuffy nose! Talk about multiple uses 😛 I noticed my hair became healthier, shinier and more manageable after use. Interestingly, this product is used before shampoo and to be washed off in 20 to 30 minutes.

Let’s talk more about the Neem here. Neem is a tree well known for its medicinal properties and Neem oil is extracted from its precious seeds. It helps to harmonize and regulates both overactive nervous processes and excessive metabolic processes in the skin. On top of that, Neem oil also helps fortify fine hair and discourage breakage. The Dr. Hauschka Neem Lotion also contain the following goodies:
1) Arnica and birch bark extracts that nourish and balance oily or dry scalp, preventing excessive oiliness or flaking while promoting stronger and fuller hair.
2) Rosemary, borage and horse chestnut to support healthy hair follicles.

The Neem Hair Lotion is a daily leave-in-treatment to be used after towel-drying the hair and applied directly onto the scalp. Usually, I do not use hair lotions as I do not like the sticky after feel. Nothing irks me more than to my hair sticking to my face. However, as you can see in the image below, the lotion is extremely light-weight and absorbs really fast into my scalp, drying out like any other after-shower days. As it is also applied directly onto the scalp, there’s no sticky afterfeel at all. Just after 2 weeks of continuous use, I noticed that my hair has more body to it and is more manageable now! Amazed!

This product is part sorcery, part natural wonder. I had to look twice at the packaging, just to confirm that I held a conditioner in my hands. The product flowed out in a watery manner, , resembling more of a shampoo than the usual thick conditioner texture, so I was apprehensive of it’s effectiveness. The usage is pretty special too, as instructions advise to message the product into the scalp.

Now, the marsh mallow in the ingredient is not the usual edible marsh mallow that we love to barbeque. It is a medical plant with regenerative power, having learnt to cope with the drying areas of salt-containing soils. It maintains its water content by forming many mucilage cells (responsible for the storage of water and food, seed germination, and thickening membranes) in it. This special ability to maintain a balanced moisture content against extreme conditions is passed onto the skin. Isn’t it a true natural wonder?

Other ingredients such as oak and nettle extracts also provide moisture to the scalp and strengthen hair. Wheat and milk proteins provide protection, elasticity and volume, while neem, macadamia nut and jojoba oils restore shine, vitality and manageability.

I did not find my hair instantly smoother during wash like most hair conditioners, perhaps due to it’s light watery texture, but this is where the sorcery happens. I was expecting a tough time combing through and worried about any tangles and breakage from the wash, however, my hair turned out smooth for combing and feels super clean! While the results are not instant, after 1 week of use, I found my scalp less oily and my hair had more vitality.

It is undeniable that Dr.Hauschka’s products are on the pricier end. Yet when you consider all the awesome ingredients packed into every application, I personally think the prices are justifiable. However, if splurging on your hair is not your style, there are other more economic alternatives.

Here are some suggestions.

Heat Pro By Watsons Hair Mask ($17.90)

A non-silicone formula, the range uses heat active technology from Japan that harnesses heat energy from blow drying and heat styling to activate NanoRepaor TM.EL , an ingredient that delivers restorative and protective benefits to your hair. Talk about high technology!

It’s goodness stays in the hair core after binding, thus hair can remain glossy and elastic even after blow drying several times. Its non-silicone formula also promotes effective absorption of oxygen for the scalp so you can have more healthy hair days ahead.

New Loreal Elseve Keratin Smooth Mask for dry & unmanageable hair ( $14.90)

Because keratin is a natural protein in your hair, giving your hair keratin treatment makes it more resilient. The Keratin Smooth Perfecting Mask by Loreal smoothes hair and makes it manageable with no frizz for up to 3 days. It also contains camellia extract which has hydrating & softening properties.  This product was tested under high humidity and high temperature conditions, proven to work well and great for the Singapore climate!

This product promises to give damaged and limp hair an airy-soft, bouncy finish. It also provides concentrated repair care for hair cuticles down to the last 15cm! A hair protector, this product is great for post perm or straightened hair.

John Frieda Frizz Ease Miracle Hair Mask for dry & unmanageable hair ($16.90)
